About the Speaker:
Prof. Susan Rutten (1960) is extraordinary Professor of
Islamic Family Law in a
European Context at Maastricht University,
Faculty of Law (the Netherlands).
She has developed long-term research expertise
in the area of Islamic Family
Law and family issues amongst ethnic
and religious minorities in the
Netherlands and Europe. She regularly
supervises theses in this
field. She wrote her own PhD thesis in 1997
on the application of Moroccan
law of inheritance in the Netherlands. She
is the chair of the Association
for the Study of Islamic Law and Law of
the Middle East (RIMO), member
of the State Committee for Private International
Law, and acts as a substitute
Judge at the Court of Appeal in
‘s-Hertogenbosch.
About the Topic:
Based on some concrete research findings, the question will be
discussed how European legal
orders can manage the coincidence
of two normative orders (the
foreign and the European, respectively the
secular and the religious) if
the person concerned calls on both.
