About the speaker
Johanna Pink is Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Freiburg. Her research focusses on the Muslim exegesis and translation of the Qur’an in the modern period in a historical perspective. She has a particular interest in transregional comparison and is currently the Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project „GloQur – The Global Qur’an“. Her most recent monograph is „Muslim Qur’anic Interpretation Today. Media, Genealogies and Interpretive Communities“ (2019).

About the topic
In the early 20th century, Qur’an translation has emerged as a transnational activity on the part of private and state actors. The conditions of colonial empires and print capitalism have contributed to the spread of a new exegetical genre that builds on the Arabic-Islamic exegetical heritage while simultaneously incorporating modernizing, polemical and apologetic discourses. This talk will shed light on these developments and explain how they may help us gain a better understanding of the historical and contemporary dynamics of global Islam.
