As has been done by a large number of European countries in the new millennium, Greece has also recently undertaken a comprehensive revision of its succession law regime. Among other items, the provisions on an heir’s liability for the deceased’s debts have been reformed (an heir is now, in principle, liable to only a limited extent); the rules on intestate succession have been amended (strengthening the spouse’s right of succession and introducing a caregiver bequest); and relatives have been given a mandatory right of protection (a shift from a forced heirship model to a compulsory portion). Inheritance contracts and waiver of inheritance have also been introduced.

In her lecture, Lena Zervogianni, professor at the University of Thessaloniki and member of the legislative commission, will explain the reform’s background and its key elements.
