Centre of Expertise on China and Korea
The Institute operates a Centre of Expertise – unique in Germany – dedicated to the systematic study of East Asian legal systems, with a particular emphasis on the civil law of the People’s Republic of China and of the Republic of Korea. Using a comparative law approach, the Centre examines the similarities and differences between these two jurisdictions and other legal systems while also analysing the political, social, and societal background of their respective rules.
Given the ever-increasing significance of the People's Republic of China, a thorough understanding of Chinese civil law has become indispensable. The Centre of Expertise has therefore committed itself to systematically researching this area of law and to overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers in order to communicate its findings.

The study of Korean civil law reflects a nuanced approach to Asian legal systems beyond Eurocentric perspectives. The primary focus is on analysing Korean law in light of historical, cultural, and philosophical influences, particularly the Confucian tradition and Chinese legal culture, both of which have had a lasting impact on its development.
