The Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg is one of the leading institutions globally for foundational comparative legal research in the areas of foreign, European, and international private, trade, economic, and procedural civil law.

Support for junior scholars is provided in various ways: Postdoctoral (Habilitation) and doctoral (Promotion) dissertations are supported via the granting of research fellow and doctoral positions. Additionally, scholars from other countries have the opportunity to participate in the institute’s scholarship programme.

The equal opportunities commissioner is responsible for promoting and monitoring the following within the institute: the equal treatment of women and men, the elimination of existing discrimination, and the prevention of future discrimination.
She plays a role in all personnel-related, organizational, and social measures that concern equal opportunity between women and men and the reconciliation of family and employment.
At the same time, she is an important contact person for all questions related to gender equality and the reconciliation of career and family.
