Dominik Krell receives Otto Hahn Medal
Dominik Krell, former Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, has been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal. The honour is bestowed by the Max Planck Society each year on young researchers for outstanding achievement in connection with their doctoral dissertations.
In his doctoral thesis titled “Islamic Law in Saudi Arabia: Concepts, Practices and Developments”, Krell examines the understanding and application of Islamic law in the legal system of Saudi Arabia. The Otto Hahn Medal represents further recognition for his dissertation that had already been awarded the doctoral prizes of the German Middle East Studies Association for Contemporary Research and Documentation (DAVO) as well as the Association for Arabic and Islamic Law (GAIR) in 2022.
Dr. Dominik Krell studied law at Freie Universität Berlin and at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In addition to his legal studies, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in the History and Cultures of the Middle East from Freie Universität Berlin and a Master of Science in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford. He was a visiting fellow at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in Riyadh and a guest researcher at the University of Bergen. In 2021 he was awarded his doctoral degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Hamburg. He was an Institute staff member from 2016 to 2023. Since May 2023, he has been a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford.
