Nadjma Yassari appointed to the German Federal Government’s Civil Advisory Board on Crisis Prevention

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Nadjma Yassari, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Research Group "Changes in God’s Law – An Inner-Islamic Comparison of Family and Succession Laws" at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, was in September 2020 appointed by the Federal Foreign Office to the German Federal Government’s Civil Advisory Board on Crisis Prevention.

The Advisory Board was founded in 2018 under the theme of “Preventing crises, managing conflicts, promoting peace”. It brings together experts on crisis prevention and peacebuilding from the realms of civil society and academia with the aim of providing advice to federal ministries. Its members are recognized experts in areas such as the social sciences, foundations, non-governmental organizations and international cooperation. The Advisory Board actively fosters regular exchange between the federal government and German civil society. The impulses the Board provide flow into the practical work of the federal government and will inform future German crisis engagement.

Nadjma Yassari conducts comparative research primarily on the national and international family and succession law of Islamic countries. In addition to this, she has for many years dedicated herself to insuring that relevant knowledge is transferred to the legal practice sector and to the public. Yassari has been engaged at the Institute as a research fellow since 2000 and has since 2015 taught Islamic law at the University of Hamburg, where in 2016 she was awarded her post-doctoral degree based on her dissertation considering Islamic family law.
