Vita

Nadjma Yassari studied law at the University of Vienna, at the Université René Descartes Paris V and at the Law Faculty of the University of Innsbruck, where in 1999 she was awarded her doctoral degree based on her dissertation “The Concept of Freedom of Contract in Islamic and Western Legal Cultures”. From 1997–1998 she was enrolled in a master’s programme at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. In 2000/01 she studied Arabic and completed research at the University of Damascus in Syria. She was awarded her post-doctoral degree in July 2016 by the University of Hamburg in connection with her comparative study of Islamic family law; her professorial teaching qualification covers the fields of comparative law, private international law and Islamic law.

Nadjma Yassari has for more than 25 years focused on Islamic law as well as family and succession law in Muslim jurisdictions. In 2000 she assumed the position of research fellow responsible for the law of Islamic countries at the Max Planck Institute for Private Law in Hamburg. Since 2009 she has led the research group “Changes in God’s Law: An Inner-Islamic Comparison of Family and Succession Laws”, in which she and her team explore the national and international family and succession law of Islamic countries. She has taught Islamic law at the University of Hamburg since 2015.
