Andrey Shirvindt studied law with an emphasis on Roman law at the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow (1998–2004), including two semesters abroad at the Humboldt University of Berlin (2002–2003). Two master’s degrees followed, one from the University of Manchester (2005) and another from the Russian School of Private Law (2008). He completed his doctoral studies in 2011 under Professor Dr. Dmitry Dozhdev at the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) with a dissertation on the role of fictions in Roman law.
After working as a paralegal at a law firm (2003–2006) and as chief consultant to the Supreme Commercial Court of the Russian Federation (2006–2008), Shirvindt has cleaved to an academic career path. He began in 2008 as an assistant and later as an associate professor at the Civil Law Chair, Faculty of Law, Lomonosov Moscow State University. From 2011 to 2022, Shirvindt also acted in various capacities (including as professor, department chair, and dean) at the Russian School of Private Law of the Sergey Alexeev Private Law Research Centre under the President of the Russian Federation.
Shirvindt spent a research stay at the Institute from 2012 to 2013 as a visiting scholar on a German Chancellor Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Vienna (2012, 2015), at the Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas (2021–2022, 2023–2024) as well as at the Università commerciale Luigi Bocconi (2023–2024). Since the German summer semester of 2022, he is a visiting scholar at the Chair for Civil, Roman, and Commercial Law (under Professor Dr. Andreas M. Fleckner), Law Faculty, Humboldt University of Berlin, where he teaches a course on Roman Law (2023, 2025). Additionally, he serves as an arbitrator in international cases and provides expert opinions on Russian law for German and foreign courts.
Andrey Shirvindt has been a member of the European Law Institute (ELI) since 2014 and a member of its Council since 2019. He has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) since 2022 and an associate member of the International Academy of Comparative Law since 2018. Moreover he was a member of the academic advisory board of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation from 2017 to 2022. He served on the Presidential Council for Codification and Enhancement of Civil Legislation of the Russian Federation from 2018 to 2022.
Andrey Shirvindt was a senior research fellow at the Institute from 2022 to 2024.
