Ruth Effinowicz named Young Academy Fellow by the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg

In recognition of her outstanding scholarship, the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg has selected Ruth Effinowicz, senior research fellow at the Institute and head of the Centre of Expertise on Japan, to be a Young Academy Fellow. The three-year grant includes academic advising and financial support as well as freedom to work on innovative interdisciplinary questions outside universities and research institutions.

The Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg supports outstanding young researchers from universities and research institutes in Northern Germany by providing a forum and access to a network of academics at all stages of their careers to discuss their research across the boundaries of their respective disciplines. It also has programs to support early-career academics.

Dr Ruth Effinowicz, LLM, MA (Japanese Studies) studied law at the University of Cologne and the Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne) as well as Japanese Studies at the University of Cologne. She also completed her dissertation on Japanese Law at Cologne. She has headed the Institute’s Centre of Expertise on Japan since 2020 and is supervising editor of the Zeitschrift für Japanisches Recht / Journal of Japanese Law (ZJapanR / J.Japan.L), which is published jointly by the Institute and the German-Japanese Association of Jurists.
