Matthias Pendl (born in 1989) studied law at the University of Graz, completing his Magister iuris in 2013 as the best in his class. He received two prizes for his thesis on a special civil law provision in the regional planning law of Styria, parts of which were published. In 2017 he received his doctorate (Doctor iuris) with distinction from the University of Graz. His dissertation entitled "Die Verjährung von Schadenersatzansprüchen gegen Organmitglieder und Abschlussprüfer" [The prescription of damage claims against board members and auditors] was published by Jan Sramek Verlag. He was awarded a doctoral scholarship from the Heinrich Graf Hardegg’sche Foundation as well as multiple prizes for his dissertation – including the prestigious 2018 Austrian Bankers’ Association Prize.
From April 2013 to May 2014, Matthias Pendl worked as a university assistant at the University of Graz under Prof. Dr. Peter Bydlinski; he was then a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for comparative and international Private Law under Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dr. h.c. Holger Fleischer from June 2014 to February 2017. He thereafter researched and taught at the University of Graz until the end of 2017, while also completing his legal traineeship at the Higher Regional Court in Graz.
After working in private practice as an associate at a multinational law firm, Matthias Pendl returned to the Institute as a Senior Research Fellow in 2018. He has since pursued his research in the working group of Institute Director Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dr. h.c. Holger Fleischer while also teaching at Bucerius Law School and at the University of Hamburg..
