Statement

September 19, 2023

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law expresses its profound condolences and sincere sympathy to the people of Morocco and Libya in the aftermath of the recent catastrophic events that have affected both nations.

We are deeply saddened by the news of the earthquake in Morocco and the flood disaster in Libya, both of which have resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and countless casualties.

Many connections – academic and personal – link us to both countries, whether through the work of the Research Group on the Law of Islamic Countries or our internationally oriented guest researcher program. We extend our condolences to those who have lost loved ones, and our thoughts are with the survivors as they rebuild their lives and communities.

We have taken first steps at the Institute to raise funds for individuals in need in Libya and Morocco. In addition, we are in contact with our colleagues on the ground to organize further assistance for affected researchers.
