Konrad Duden awarded the Kurt Hartwig Siemers Prize

December 15, 2022

Konrad Duden, research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, has been awarded the 2022 Kurt Hartwig Siemers Prize for his post-doctoral dissertation. The honour bestowed by the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung and the Edmund Siemers-Stiftung is in recognition of Duden’s work on the influence of digitalization on property law and its private law consequences.

"Konrad Duden is an exceptional jurist. He completed his second state exam in Hamburg and conducted research for several years at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law. It was here in Hamburg that he wrote his post-doctoral dissertation on property law and digitalization. Having been highly impressed by his selection of a contemporary legal topic bearing on the everyday use of connected devices and by his identification of existing legislative gaps, the board of trustees was unanimous in its vote", said Dr. Ekkehard Nümann, president of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung.

The Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung awards the Kurt Hartwig Siemers Research Prize (Kurt-Hartwig-Siemers-Wissenschaftspreis) every two years to scholars who have performed exceptional academic work above and beyond completion of their doctoral dissertation. First bestowed in 1970, the award is conferred jointly in cooperation with the Edmund Siemers-Stiftung. The award ceremony took place this year on 14 December 2022 in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce’s Albert-Schäfer-Saal. Congratulatory remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c mult. Jürgen Basedow, Director Emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law.

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Konrad Duden, LL.M. (Cambridge) studied chemistry and law at the Universities of Munich, Heidelberg, and Bilbao. After earning his Masters at the University of Cambridge he was awarded his doctoral degree in 2015 from the University of Heidelberg. In February 2023 he will assume the position of Professor of Civil Law and Private International Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Leipzig.
