About the speaker:

Prof Jan L Neels is Distinguished Professor of International Commercial Law at the University of Johannesburg and the course coordinator of the LLM in International Commercial Law. He specializes in the field of (Commercial) Private International Law. With more than 50 publications to his name, primarily in the field of private international law, he is the Director of the Research Centre for Private International Law in Emerging Countries at the University of Johannesburg.

About the topic:

The drafting of various sets of African Principles of Commercial Private International Law is a project of the Research Centre for Private International Law at the University of Johannesburg. The future sets of principles, in the form of model laws, could be used by national legislators on the continent and African economic integration organizations, particularly the African Union, in, respectively, domestic legislation and regional or supranational laws of a soft or binding nature. Moreover, the proposed regulation of private international law of contract is essential in the further development of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which was established in 2018.

About the new virtual workshop series:

There is a growing interest in the study of private international law in Africa. In an environment of growing international transactions in both civil and commercial matters, private international law can play a significant role in Africa in addressing issues such as globalization, regional economic integration, immigration, etc. The series intends to discuss new scholarly work on private international law in Africa and advance solutions on how the current framework of that field can be improved on the continent.
