Dominik Krell’s dissertation doubly distinguished

Dominik Krell, senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, has received accolades from two renowned professional organizations for his dissertation.

On September 13, 2022, Dominik Krell, who studied law, Islamic studies, and social anthropology, was awarded the German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO) Dissertation Award. The annual award recognizes the best doctoral thesis of 2021 on a topic in contemporary Middle East studies by a member of DAVO. Krell is sharing this year’s award with one other honouree.

On October 7, 2022, Krell also won the Association for Arabic and Islamic Law (GAIR) Dissertation Award, which honours the best doctoral thesis on an Islamic and Arabic law topic.

Krell’s dissertation, “Islamic Law in Saudi Arabia: Concepts, Practices and Developments”, studies the understanding and application of Islamic law in Saudi Arabia’s legal system. After studying law at the Free University of Berlin and Berlin Humboldt University, Krell passed the first state law examination in 2016. He also earned a B.A. in History and Culture of the Middle East from the Free University of Berlin and an M.Sc. in Social Anthropology from Oxford University. He has been a visiting fellow at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies (KFCRIS) in Riyadh and a guest researcher at the University of Bergen. Krell has been at the Institute since 2016. He completed his doctoral studies summa cum laude at Hamburg in 2021.

The DAVO is a non-profit organization of more than 1 300 members. It was founded in 1993 as a forum for people interested in contemporary Middle East studies and relations between the Middle East and other regions. The Middle East is understood to mean the Arab League nations plus Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, and the Muslim-majority former states of the Soviet Union as well as neighbouring regions including Israel.

The GAIR was founded in 1997 with the objective of facilitating mutual understanding and awareness between European and Islamic legal systems and practices, particularly as they exist in the Arab world.
