Anne Röthel elected to the Executive Committee of the Association of German Jurists

Anne Röthel, Director of the Institute, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Deutscher Juristentag e. V. (Association of German Jurists). She thus joins the governing body of the organization responsible for Europe’s largest professional conference on legal policy.

Röthel’s election took place during the 75th German Jurists Forum, held in Erfurt from 16 to 18 September 2026. The Executive Committee is the most important body of the 5,000 member strong association, which is best known for the German Jurists Forum (Deutscher Juristentag) held every two years. The Executive Committee manages the association and, in particular, prepares the biennial conventions by determining the topics, experts, and speakers.

Since its foundation as a non-profit association in 1860, the Association of German Jurists has had the aim of examining, on a scholarly basis, areas where reform and supplementation of the legal system is needed, identifying shortcomings in the law, and presenting to the public proposals for the further development of the law. Today, it is regarded as the voice of the nation’s legal profession.

The German Jurists Forum, at which more than 2,500 legal professionals from all fields of activity – including the judiciary, the bar, academia, politics, public administration, and business – regularly come together to address the major legal issues of our time, is recognized as an independent forum boasting broad expert credentials. Its resolutions attract considerable attention in political, academic, and public circles, and it is not uncommon for these resolutions to surface in subsequent legislative proposals and the case law of the highest courts.

Prof. Dr Anne Röthel studied law and political science at the University of Cologne and the Université de Clermont-Ferrand. In 2003, she was awarded her habilitation by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2004 to 2023, she held the Chair of Civil Law, European and International Private Law at Bucerius Law School. Since 2010, she has been a regular visiting professor at the Université de Paris Panthéon-Assas. Further research stays have taken her to Oxford and Kyoto. In 2024, she was appointed as a director of the Institute. Among her scholarly responsibilities, she is co-editor of the Zeitschrift für das gesamte Familienrecht (FamRZ); her professional memberships include the German Section of the International Commission of Jurists, the Working Group for Legal Studies and Contemporary History at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony; she sits on the Board of Trustees of the Hamburg Wissenschaftliche Stiftung. Since October 2025, she has also been spokesperson for the Max Planck Law legal research network. In 2026, she was named honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh Law School.
