Ruth Effinowicz receives JaDe Prize
The Foundation for the Promotion of Japanese-German Scientific and Cultural Relations, for short the “JaDe Stiftung”, has awarded its JaDe Prize to Ruth Effinowicz, head of the Institute’s Centre of Expertise on Japan. The prize honours outstanding achievements and accomplishment in the area of Japanese-German scientific and cultural relations.
The award honours Effinowicz’s work at the crossroads of Japanese and German legal studies. As a Japanologist and a lawyer, Effinowicz has made important contributions to advance the understanding of current societal issues. The award ceremony took place on 7 February 2026 at the Japanese Cultural Centre in Cologne. This year, the prize is endowed with 3,000 euros.
Dr Ruth Effinowicz, LL.M., MA (Japanology) studied law at the universities of Cologne and Paris 1 (Pantéon-Sorbonne). She studied Japanology and earned a doctorate in Japanese law at Cologne. Since 2020, she has been the head of the Centre of Expertise on Japan and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Japanese Law / Zeitschrift für Japanisches Recht (J.Japan.L. / ZJapanR). She supports the exchange between Germany and Japan through a broad range of other activities as well.
