Anne Röthel to join initiative to foster state readiness
Director at the Institute Anne Röthel has been invited to join a non-partisan initiative to improve the readiness and capabilities of the state. The group, made up of about 50 experts in government, policy and administration, commerce, education, and the sciences, was convened under the aegis of Federal President Steinmeier and tasked with developing more effective ways to institute reforms. The commission’s report is expected within the next 12 months.
The initiative, in German the “Initiative für einen handlungsfähigen Staat”, was started by former government ministers Peer Steinbrück and Thomas de Maizière, the constitutional jurist and long-time president of the Federal Constitutional Court Andreas Voßkuhle, and corporate manager and board member Julia Jäkel. The work is supported by the Hertie Foundation, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Stiftung Mercator, and the Zeit Stiftung Bucerius. The group will study why so many needed reforms are stifled in their incipiency and has been asked to identify ways to structurally improve the agility and effectiveness of our government institutions. Anne Röthel will join a working group tasked with examining the structural prerequisites of social change. “I’m delighted to have been given this opportunity to contribute my academic perspective to this assignment”, says Professor Röthel.
Professor Dr Anne Röthel studied law and government at the University of Cologne and the Université de Clermont-Ferrand (now the University of Clermont Auvergne) and habilitated through the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2003. She held the faculty chair for civil law, European private law and private international law at Bucerius Law School from 2004–2023.
