Public transportation

It is an easy 5-minute walk to the Institute from the Dammtor train station. You can get to the Dammtor station on several S-Bahn lines: the S2, S5 and S7 (the latter only when traveling in the direction from Altona). It is a stop on several railway lines of the Deutsche Bahn, and a number of bus lines also stop in front of the main entrance to the Dammtor station: lines 4, 5, 19 and 114.

Alternatively, it is about a 10-minute walk to the Institute from the Stephansplatz U-Bahn station. The Stephansplatz station is on the U1 line and is served by bus lines 4, 5, 19, and 112.

You can buy tickets in the HVV-App, at ticket vending machines located at all U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations as well as larger bus stops, and at https://www.hvv.de/en/tickets/onlineshop.

Automobile

The Institute is located at Mittelweg 187, 20148 Hamburg. The best route is via the junction of Edmund-Siemers-Allee and Mittelweg, which is situated directly in front of Dammtor station. There is public parking on Mittelweg; but please be aware that spaces are limited and subject to a fee.

Long-distance trains

A number of long-distance Deutsche Bahn train routes stop at the Dammtor station. The other long-distance stations are Hamburg-Altona, Central Station, and Hamburg-Harburg. You can best reach the Institute from these other stations by travelling to the Dammtor station via the S-Bahn: lines S2, S5, or S7 (the latter only when traveling in the direction from Altona).

Airplane

Hamburg’s international airport is located approximately 10 kilometers from the Institute. The airport has its own S-Bahn station, which is served by the S1. With that line you can reach the Institute in approximately 35 minutes, as follows:

Board the S1 train in the direction of Wedel and exit at Central Station. Then transfer to either the S2 (in the direction of Altona/Diebsteich) or the S5 (in the direction of Elbgaustraße) and exit at the Dammtor station. Alternatively, you can travel one stop on the S1 from the airport to Ohlsdorf and then transfer to the U1 (in the direction of Farmsen) and proceed to the Stephansplatz U-Bahn station.
