Yuko Nishitani (Kyoto University): Global Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility

About the speaker:

Yuko Nishitani is Professor of International Private and Business Law at Kyoto University in Japan. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg and regularly visits Max Planck Institute in Hamburg. She is currently doing research on global legal pluralism, business and human rights, multiculturalism in private international family law, and international child abduction. She is a member of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law and a titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law.

About the topic:

Private international law (or conflict of laws) generally provides important mechanisms for global governance. It may, however, encounter certain limitations in areas, where states take divergent positions and do not share common values. Against this background, this workshop will address “business and human rights” from a global perspective with a particular focus on Asia, and analyse various legal and non-legal means of achieving corporate social responsibility in today’s globalized world.

The virtual workshop series “Current Research in Private International Law" is organised by Prof. Dr. Ralf Michaels and Christine Toman. The series features guest speakers and Institute staff members who present and discuss their work on current developments and research topics in private international law. The workshops are geared to scholars who are researching in the field of private international law, but attendance is open to all individuals having an academic interest (including doctoral candidates and students).
