Call for Contributions: Central Bank Digital Currencies in Legal Perspective

Workshop

  • Date: Aug 28, 2026
  • Location: Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law

Call for Contributions

We warmly invite legal scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to join us for a workshop to present their work on the legal issues arising from the introduction of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

As CBDCs evolve from concept to reality in various jurisdictions, they present challenges to existing legal frameworks that transcend the traditional boundaries between public and private law. We believe that fostering a dialogue that incorporates a variety of perspectives is crucial to addressing these challenges. The workshop will examine issues such as institutional competence and monetary sovereignty, data governance and surveillance risk, and the implications of CBDC custody and transfer for contract and property law. It will also address technological governance and the liability regimes for system failures or fraud, as well as the private international law aspects of CBDCs. The workshop aims to foster cross-sectional and interdisciplinary scholarly exchange to contribute to the development of a coherent and comprehensive legal framework for digital sovereign money.

This workshop is part of an interdisciplinary research project entitled ‘Central Bank Digital Currencies from a Legal Perspective’, which is funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) under its 3501 Programme. The project´s primary goal is to propose a legislative framework for adopting CBDCs in Türkiye. To this end, we particularly welcome comparative contributions on this topic from other jurisdictions. Early-career researchers and PhD students are particularly encouraged to apply.
