Wijnand van Woerkom receives Donald H. Berman Award for Best Student Paper

The International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (IAAIL) has honoured Wijnand van Woerkom, Institute research fellow in the Minerva Fast Track Research Group “Artificial Justice”, with the Donald H. Berman Best Student Paper Award.

He received the notable award for his article Formal Results on Case-Base Consistency: A COMPAS Case Study, which stood out for both its quality as well as its originality. Following the presentation of the paper by van Woerkom at the 20th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law (ICAIL 2025) at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in Chicago, it has recently been published in the Conference Proceedings.

Dr. Wijnand van Woerkom studied artificial intelligence and logic at the University of Amsterdam. In 2025 he was awarded his doctoral degree from the University of Utrecht in connection with his dissertation A Fortiori Case-Based Reasoning: Formal Studies with Applications in Artificial Intelligence and Law.
