Lettering UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030

The Private Side of Transforming our World

UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the Role of Private International Law

Enabling all citizens of the world to live in dignity while preserving our natural resources is one of the greatest global challenges of our time. This challenge is reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which have been set out by the United Nations. The project “The Private Side of Transforming our World – UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the Role of Private International Law” aims to raise an awareness of how PIL – with its methods and institutions – is also capable of making a significant contribution in the quest for sustainable development.

The project has been initiated by Institute Director Ralf Michaels together with Verónica Ruiz Abou-Nigm (University of Edinburgh) and Hans van Loon (former Secretary General Hague Conference on Private International Law). The 19 researchers who are participating represent all of the world’s continents and are intent upon studying the relationship between the SDGs and PIL. They draw upon their own personal backgrounds and academic experiences, thus offering, for example, the perspective of the Global South.

The resulting findings constitute the basis of an edited volume that was published in November 2021 by Intersentia, in which each of the 17 SDGs is the subject of its own individual chapter. The work has been made accessible online at no cost (open access) in order to ensure its availability to a maximum number of readers around the world.

The project and its results were presented and discussed in the framework of a conference held from 9 to 11 November 2021 at the Hamburg Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law. The hybrid conference was simultaneously translated into Spanish and featured the digital and live participation of scholars from around the world.

The project “The Private Side of Transforming our World – UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the Role of Private International Law” made clear that PIL is capable of playing an important role in surmounting global challenges. The effort has already served to inspire further initiatives and conferences having similar topics and aims: Related Projects

Institute Director Ralf Michaels is co-initiator of an international research project that looks to fill this gap. In a just-released edited volume, each of the Agenda’s 17 sustainable development goals is for the first time analysed with a view towards assessing the contribution that PIL can make to their achievement.  more
