Vita
Justin Monsenepwo holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Université Protestante au Congo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He awarded his doctoral degree 2022 at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, from where he also holds an LL.M. in international and European business law. His doctoral research explores the law applicable to security interests in securities held with an intermediary under the law of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA). His dissertation was awarded the Gemeinsamen Promotionspreis der Unterfränkischen Gedenkjahrstiftung und der Universität Würzburg.
Justin Monsenepwo lectures in commercial law and private international law in Africa at the University of Montreal (Canada), the University of Johannesburg (South Africa), and the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (China). He is also a Research Associate at the “China, Law and Development” Project of the University of Oxford and at the Faculty of Law of the University of Johannesburg. He has consulted for the private sector and intergovernmental organizations (such as the Hague Conference on Private International Law and the International organization for Migration) in commercial private international law, rule of law, and trade policy in Africa. He is also a co-founder and a member of the Working Group on Congolese Private International Law, which aim to draft modern and effective conflict of laws rules for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He received several scholarships, including from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
Justin Monsenepwo’s principal research interests are in private international law (conflict of laws), regional economic integration and international dispute settlement, with a special focus on the law of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA). Justin’s publications include books and articles on the harmonization of business law and private international law in Africa, among others.
