Dominik’s doctoral research focuses on the Saudi-Arabian legal system. Based largely on the application of uncodified Islamic law, the Saudi legal system has faced criticism from outside, as well as from inside the kingdom for being slow, inefficient and unpredictable.

Since 2000 the Saudi government has imposed a number of reforms of the judicial system without touching the application of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) itself. By focusing on the position of the judge, the research project will try to understand how these changes influence the legal practice and legal culture in Saudi-Arabia. More broadly, the project aims to analyse the way procedural rules interplay with substantial law in Islamic legal systems.
