The Latin America Unit at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg is one of the most important competence centres for Latin American private law and business law in Germany and Europe. With regard to the areas of research undertaken at the Institute, the Unit is charged with following legal developments in 19 Latin American countries. Together with the long-existing focal point on the law of the Mercosur, Brazilian law is a particular subject of academic inquiry. In addition to reliance on the vast holdings of the Institute library, a key basis for research activities is the close personal contact cultivated with Latin American legal scholars and their respective institutions, this including the care and support of guest scholars conducting research at the Institute.
