Foreign Law

A long-term focus on analysis of foreign laws is one of the Institute’s main research priorities. Our regional centres of expertise provide academic support to transformational processes and reforms in legal orders that are subject to particularly dynamic development. These centres are also devoted to developing a depth of knowledge about economically important legal orders that are relatively inaccessible due to language difficulties. Regionally, we focus on China, Japan, Russia and other CIS states, Southeast Europe, Islamic countries and Latin America.

Family and Succession Law in Islamic Countries

The “Changes in God’s Law” research group is currently the world’s only research unit that engages with the laws in effect in Islamic countries in an interdisciplinary and comparative way. The research group works in three areas: it serves as a centre of excellence on law in Islamic countries, it conducts foundational research, and it carries out projects on current issues.

Centres of Excellence

Centre of Excellence for China

The Institute is home to a centre of excellence on the laws of the People’s Republic of China that is Germany’s only such centre in this form. The research interests of the centre’s scholars lie primarily in the area of commercial law, economic law, and financial market law. Close academic and personal ties with Chinese institutions and organisations inform the centre’s research.

Centre of Excellence for Japan

The Institute’s Japan unit is one of Europe’s most important contact points for legal questions concerning Japanese civil, commercial and economic law. A broad network of academic contacts with top universities and other institutions in Japan, as well as personal ties with Japanese colleagues, inform the centre’s intensive research.

Centre of Excellence for Russia and Other CIS States

The Centre of Excellence for Russia at the Max Planck Institute for Private Law deals with the laws of states that emerged from the former Soviet Union. It provides scholarly input on transformation processes and engages in legal dialogue with states in the post-Soviet sphere. Russian civil law is one area of focus.

Centre of Excellence for Southeast Europe

The Centre of Excellence for Southeast Europe studies legal systems in eastern Europe, especially in countries with Slavic languages and the successor states to the former Yugoslavia. It observes and participates in legal dialogue, and it interconnects legal scholars from the region and the EU. The centre’s research currently focuses on family law.
