Nacht des Wissens
Saturday, 4 November 2017

Hamburg’s Nacht des Wissens sees more than 50 research centres, universities and institutes of higher education in the greater metropolitan Hamburg area open their doors to public visitors and present their work.

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law is proud to be one of the participants. You can witness the premier of Draw Your Law, what promises to be a new and entertaining presentation format.

While some may think that law cannot be drawn, we will demonstrate the contrary. Watch as an illustrator depicts – in real-time drawings – the short project presentations made by Institute staff.

Speakers for this segment will include Institute Director Prof. Reinhard Zimmermann, who will discuss comparative legal research at the Institute and answer the question “What is it that legal scholars actually do?”. In a talk titled “Confrontational Germans, Peaceful Japanese”, Prof. Harald Baum will consider cultural differences in approaches to conflict. Finally, Priv.-Doz. Dr. Nadjma Yassari will present the Max Planck Research Group “Changes in God’s Law” in her presentation “Scharia in Germany?”.

Come watch as a portrait of the Institute’s work, quite literally, takes shape before your eyes.

Programme:

7:30 to 9:00 PM: Draw your Law

9:30 PM: International Bargespräche

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Ellger will take the stage for the International Bargespräche and – mindful of confidentiality requirements – discuss in a relaxed setting unusual and complicated international legal cases that have been handled in the course of the Institute’s expert opinion practice.

5:00 PM/6:30 PM/8:30 PM: Library tour
