The International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs at the University of Hamburg was established in April 2002 by the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, in co-operation with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (Hamburg), the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Heidelberg), the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (Hamburg) and the University of Hamburg.
The idea The Research School has set up a unique interdisciplinary Ph.D. program. The School's researchers cover the legal, economic, ecological and geophysical aspects of the use, protection and organization of the oceans.
The School provides extensive research capacities as well as its own teaching curriculum. In addition, the researchers can use the facilities of other institutions of the Law of the Sea, such as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), with whom a co-operation has been established.
The School bolsters interdisciplinary research. Its researchers work in the fields of law, economics and natural sciences. People involved Directors are professors and lecturers from the cooperating institutions. They act as supervisors for dissertations and elect applicants for the School's Ph.D. grants.
While Directors are leading researchers in their respective research fields, Scholars and Associates are students with outstanding academic credentials who write their Ph.D. thesis at the School.
Almost all Scholars and Associates write their thesis under the supervision of one of the Directors. However, this is not a strict prerequisite for admission.
In addition, Scholars receive a full scholarship, whereas Associates are expected to find other sources of funding.
The Research School tries to keep close links with its Alumni. Facilities
The School does not operate a faculty building. Instead, the students work at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law or at their respective supervisor's institution.
The regular meetings take place in the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law where the Coordinating Office is located.
