Research Focus

The combination of foundational research and assistance in the preparation of law reform, as envisaged by the Institute's founding director Ernst Rabel, continues to guide the current work of the Institute and to determine the selection of new research projects.

Within the context of European legal harmonisation, particular emphasis is placed, at present, on contract law and the law of non-contractual obligations; company law and the law concerning non-profit organisations, finance and capital market law; insurance law and the law of credit securities; as well as competition law and conflict of laws.  Beyond Europe’s borders, the Institute has developed regional focuses on East Asian, Latin American and Islamic legal systems as well as on the study of mixed legal systems.  The Institute's current work in company law emphasizes the development of European law in comparison with legal developments in the United States and Japan.
