Rabels Zeitschrift

Rabels Zeitschrift für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht/The Rabel Journal of Comparative and International Private Law (RabelsZ)

The quarterly appearing "Zeitschrift für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht"/”The Rabel Journal of Comparative and International Private Law” was established in 1927 by Ernst Rabel as a vehicle and central forum for fundamental research on the international aspects of private law, economic law and procedural law.  Hence, the branches of the journal address comparative and foreign law, international private law, economic law and procedural law as well as legal harmonisation inclusive of European law.

The Rabel Journal pursues theoretical as well as practical goals.  It is a forum for dialogue between international scholars and promotes the academic exchange of foreign research.  It aims to provide legislatures assistance by accomplishing foreign research and to take a position on the questions posed by the increasing harmonisation of law through international treaties.  During the journal’s now more than 75 years of existence, this objective has maintained undiminished validity.  By assuming the name of the journal’s founder in 1961, continuity has been further reinforced.

The Rabel Journal publishes foundational articles from all fields of study undertaken at the Institute, with recent years featuring an enhanced inclusion of economic and European themes.  Particular regard is given to agreements, directives and regulations of the European Community as well as the agreements of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, many of whose agreements have also been ratified by Germany.  Special emphasis issues serve to illuminate a theme at length and from a variety of perspectives.  As materials, texts of new laws, treaties and draft proposals are reproduced and critically evaluated.  Finally, a comprehensive review section provides a treatment and discussion of scholarly literature generated domestically and, above all, internationally.

70 volumes have appeared since 1927.  Average yearly coverage in a volume is approximately 800 printed pages.  The contents of each year’s volume are accessible in a yearly index as well in a cumulative 10-year index.  Further information on RabelsZ and particularly a listing of the content in recent volumes can be found at the following site:
