Prof. Dr. Jürgen Basedow Named Member of the Board of Trustees of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung

24.07.2007

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Basedow, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftlichen Stiftung.

The Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung was established in 1907 upon the initiation of later-mayor Dr. Werner von Melle. Along with the „Allgemeinen Vorlesungswesen“ (1895), the „Professorenkonvent der Wissenschaftlichen Anstalten“ (1892) and the „Kolonialinstitut“ (1908) the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung is one of the four founding institutions from which the University of Hamburg emanated in 1919. The foundation's public endowment, bestowed by Hamburg merchants, was twice drastically decimated - from the inflationary crisis of 1922 and through the currency reform of 1948. The revitalization of the foundation following the second world war can above all be credited to the intensive efforts of long-time president Kurt Hartwig Siemers.
