Conferral of Honorary Degree by the University of Edinburgh on Professor Dr. Reinhard Zimmermann

25.06.2007

This occurred during the graduation ceremony of the school of law on 23 June and on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the first chair of law being established in Edinburgh.

The laudatory address noted that his work, particularly "Law of Obligations - Roman Foundations of the Civilian Tradition" has laid a new foundation for our understanding of the development of private law in Europe and thereby realised a significant prerequisite for the establishment of a European legal culture under the insignia of the European Community. Zimmermann is the 1996 winner of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. Along with Zimmermann, the American philosopher Martha Nussbaum and the Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith were conferred honorary degrees.
