10.01.2007

Professor Dr. Reinhard Zimmermann, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg was conferred an honorary doctorate by the faculty of the University of Capetown. Thereby recognized was not only the scholastic work of Professor Zimmermann but also his contribution to law and justice in South Africa. Contemporaneously honoured were the South African resistance fighter and constitutional judge Albie Sach, Professor Sir Bob Hepple and Mr. Justice Dennis Davis.

From 1981 to 1988, as the apartheid system broke down piece by piece, Professor Zimmermann held the Roman Law and Comparative Law chair on the University of Cape Town. In the most difficult periods of transition, 1986/87, he served as dean of the faculty at Cape Town as well as the president of the South African Association of Jurists and advocated ever further for freedom in research, freedom in teaching, freedom of opinion and the reestablishment of a constitutional state.
