Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Basedow, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law was elected as a member of the American Law Institute (ALI). The 3000 member strong association comprises almost exclusively US attorneys with only a handful of foreign jurists and professors being chosen for membership. Prof. Basedow's selection recognises his exceptional efforts towards improving legislature and jurisprudence.

The American Law Institute was established in 1923 in order to reduce complexity and uncertainty in US law and to promote its compatability with evolving social relationships. The ALI has significantly influenced US jurisprudence with its publication of numerous Restatements. The most important body of legislation shaped by the ALI is the Uniform Commercial Code, the model code which has been adopted by all 50 states and which has unified much of US commercial law. The Americal Law Institute is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
