Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Klaus J. Hopt awarded medal of honour by the Bucerius Law School

On 26 April 2010, Institute Director Emeritus Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Klaus J. Hopt was awarded a medal of honour in Hamburg from the Bucerius Law School for his lifelong efforts in the field of legal research and teaching. The award recognises, in particular, the pioneering work done by Klaus J. Hopt in the areas of German and international capital market law and also the counsel and support he provided to practitioners and policy-makers as well as junior scholars.

The Bucerius Law School characterised Klaus J. Hopt as a "firmly anchored, interdisciplinary bridge between the European and Anglo-American legal traditions" and as a "pathfinder of modern capital market law". Of special emphasis was his role as the quintessential legal scholar from both a professional and personal perspective.

Through his numerous academic publications and his decades-long efforts in the drafting and application of legislation, Klaus J. Hopt significantly impacted German capital market law. In addition to professorships held in Tübingen, Florence, Bern and Munich, he also acted as guest professor in Europe, the USA and Japan. Furthermore he served as judge for the Stuttgart Court of Appeals (OLG), counseled the European Commission on company law as a member of the High Level Group of Company Law Experts, was a management board member of the Deutsche Börse Group and presently, among other efforts, is a board member of the European Corporate Governance Institute in Brussels.

TheBucerius Law School in Hamburg is Germany’s first private law school with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. It was founded in 2000 by the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius. Awarded once every two years, the medals of honour conferred by the Bucerius Law School recognise outstanding personalities for resonant contributions made to the field of law in Germany.
