International Conference in Israel: „Convergence and Divergence of Law: German and Israeli Perspectives“

24.03.2008

Multiple fellows of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg as well as single representatives from the Bucerius Law School and the University of Trier were guests of the Buchmann Faculty of Law in Tel-Aviv on 24 and 25 March. In the context of the international conference „Convergence and Divergence of Law: German and Israeli Perspectives“ the German scholars and their Israeli colleagues from the University of Tel-Aviv exchanged their respective current research findings.

At the center of the numerous lectures stood the similarities and differences of the European, German and Israeli legal systems as well as possible future convergences among the systems. The individual lectures will be made generally available in a forthcoming publication. The conference was initiated in the early 1980's in order to strengthen German-Israeli ties and to illuminate the varying research emphases of the institutions and their scholars.

The German researchers were especially taken with the hospitality shown to them by their Israeli counterparts. Israeli Minister of Justice Daniel Friedmann, former professor at the Buchmann Faculty of Law, personally greeted the German scholars. As a longstanding friend of MPI for private law he understands the interest of the Institute as to legal policy aspects of Israeli law, and he has encouraged the cooperation of German-Israeli institutions. In addition to the legal aspects of the international conference, a trip to Jeruslem added an imposing historical and religious dimension to the event.
