Dr. Alexander Hellgardt awarded the Deutscher Studienpreis of the Körber Foundation
23.11.2009
Dr. Alexander Hellgardt, former research fellow of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, received the Körber Foundation's Deutscher Studienpreis in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences category for the dissertation he completed while at the Institute.
Eligibility for the Deutscher Studienpreis is limited to the doctoral recipients whose dissertations received a summa cum laude or magna cum laude notation in the preceding academic year. Alexander Hellgardt successfully convinced the jury with his dissertation „Kapitalmarktdeliktsrecht“ which presents a comprehensive blueprint for re-configuring financial market liability in order to better protect investors from financial harm. In his work he proposes broadening the disclosure liability of firms as well as including investment banks, auditors and rating agencies into the ambit of potential liability. Such mechanisms would not only make actions for damages more viable, but would also improve investor oversight of firms. Alexander Hellgardt is currently working on his post-doctoral dissertation (Habilitation) while serving as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competetion and Tax Law in Munich.
The Körber Founation was established in 1959 by entrepreneur Kurt A. Körber. It is engaged in a number of projects in the areas of international politics, education, science, business and youth culture. Each year the Körber Foundation makes more than 100,000 Euros in prize money available for Deutscher Studienpreis awards which are distributed across three academic categories. Conferral of this year's awards took place on 23 November 2009 at an academic convocation led by the President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert.
