Encyclopaedia of European Private Law

Hamburg MPI for Private Law publishes comprehensive two-volume compendium for scholars and practitioners
For more than 20 years a body of private law has been developing within the European Union which has increasingly displaced the national private laws of the member states. The process, however, has pursued neither a systematic nor comprehensive course. Instead, short-term needs and considerations of a political nature have been the primary driving force behind these developments. Now, the Hamburg Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law is releasing a two-volume Encyclopaedia of European Private Law (the Handwörterbuch des Europäischen Privatrechts) which penetrates this thicket of law and organises it in a comprehensive compilation of 473 entries ranging from Abschlussprüfer (Auditor), Dienstleistungsvertrag (Service Contracts) and Ehevertrag (Marital Agreements), and on to Patentrecht (Patent Law), Seeverkehr (Carriage of Goods by Sea) and Zwingendes Recht (Mandatory Law). Incorporating the historical and comparative dimensions, the individual entries analyse the European lines of development and also comprehensively cover all endeavours towards a European and international legal harmonisation.
The Encyclopaedia is a work unmatched in its scope and conceptual approach. Comprehensively portraying the whence and whither of European private law, it represents an indispensable reference work for legal scholars, practitioners and legislators alike.
As a joint project covering the full expanse of the Institute’s areas of research, the Encyclopaedia is edited by current Institute Directors Jürgen Basedow and Reinhard Zimmermann as well as former Director Klaus J. Hopt with the editorial assistance of Martin Illmer. The more than 120 authors of the entries are largely either current or former research fellows of the Institute.
The two-volume German language work is being published by Mohr Siebeck. Anticipated for 2011 is the release of an English version which will be published by Oxford University Press.
